Role of Women in the Civil War:
Women helped put by raising money, providing aid for soldiers and their families, and ran emergency hospitals. Although they were suppose to stay at home and care for their spouse and children, thousands of women in the North and South joined the war to sign up as nurses. Over 400 women dressed up like men to fight in the Union and Confederate armies! A volunteer by the name of Clara Barton arranged a collection of medicine and supplies to deliver to the battlefield. She was known as the "angel of the battlefield". She also founded the American Red Cross.
